Earthcare Activity
First Bucket Collection
Collect Buckets: Every other week, swap full buckets for clean ones. Say hello to neighbors and chat if they’re home.
Build Compost Piles: Place the full buckets near the bin. Dump each bucket, one at a time, into the Geobin or into one 3’x3’ compost bay. Rinse buckets with a hose after emptying. After every two or three buckets, layer in some browns (paper, shavings, or dry leaves). Avoid thick layers of wet material. Keep it light and mixed.
Pause and Celebrate: Once the pile is built, pause for a cool drink or snack. Ask each other, “What were your highs and lows this week?” Toss leftover compostable food or drinks into the compost pile. Cover the pile with a tarp and insert a thermometer. Clean up the site and stack your rinsed buckets for next week.

Second Bucket Collection
Collect Buckets: Every other week, swap full buckets for clean ones. Say hello to neighbors and chat if they’re home.

After every two or three buckets, layer in some browns (paper, shavings, or dry leaves). Avoid thick layers of wet material. Keep it light and mixed.
Collect More Full Buckets: When the next round of full buckets comes in, choose whether to add to the current pile (if there’s room), or start a new one (this helps the first compost pile finish faster).

Final Party
Plan a final party for Week 10.
1. Invite all the neighbors who participated in the challenge.
2. Bring snacks, or turn it into a potluck. Use the Volunteer Roles sheet to organize it.
3. Ask each person to say their name, which home they live in, and something most people don’t know about them.
4. Share how 25% of what goes into landfills is actually compostable.
5. Thank your neighbors for helping divert from the landfill the number of gallons you composted.
6. Invite neighbors to take a bucket of compost home with them.
7. Let them know that they’re invited the next time you do another Earthcare Activity.
