Leading a Tend Group
What happens in a Tend Group?
What happens in a Tend Group?
A Tend Group is a gathering of four to five households that meets weekly for 10 weeks. Every other week, you’ll share a simple meal and explore Scripture together through guided conversation and prayer (Tend keeps it simple with word-for-word scripts!). On alternating weeks, your group will invite neighbors to join in a hands-on Earthcare Activity—like gardening, cleaning up a shared space, or planting trees—to care for creation and build relationships right where you live.
Shared meals, meaningful conversations, and simple acts of caring for the Earth help your group connect with God, your neighbors, and the Earth.
I’ve never led a group before. Can I still lead a Tend Group?
I’ve never led a group before. Can I still lead a Tend Group?
Yes! Tend keeps it simple with ready-to-run, low-prep guides. Leaders don’t have to teach. You’ll get word-by-word scripts that guide you every step of the way—so you can just come with curiosity and join the conversation.
Do I need to be a pastor to lead a group?
Do I need to be a pastor to lead a group?
Anyone can lead a group! Tend is designed for lay leaders and comes with a step-by-step, biblically rooted guide that makes leading simple for anyone—no matter their level of experience.
How much time does it take to run Tend?
How much time does it take to run Tend?
Tend comes ready to run and requires no new staff, programming, or training. It’s designed for busy people who don’t have time for lots of prep. Groups meet once a week for 10 weeks, and each gathering lasts about 90 minutes. Tend Group leaders need about 20 minutes of prep time to send reminder texts, review the materials, and get an idea of what’s ahead. The rest takes care of itself!
Tend isn’t another program you have to run. It just fits naturally into the life of your church, without adding to your workload.
Who is Tend for? Who should I invite to my group?
Who is Tend for? Who should I invite to my group?
Tend is made for real life and real people. Whether you invite adults, youth, seniors, or a mix of ages including families with kids, Tend is designed for people of all abilities.
What if a group misses a week?
What if a group misses a week?
Life happens—and Tend is designed with that in mind. If your group needs to skip a week, don’t stress. Simply pick up where you left off when you meet again. The guides are flexible, so you won’t fall behind or miss anything essential. The most important thing is to keep gathering, even if your timeline stretches a little. Consistency and connection matter far more than perfection.
What if people aren’t comfortable inviting neighbors to join the Earthcare Activity?
What if people aren’t comfortable inviting neighbors to join the Earthcare Activity?
One of the greatest joys is watching someone come to faith. Jesus loves to use people like us to make the introduction. The trouble is, most of us have only seen this modeled as awkward “cold calls” to strangers.
Inviting neighbors shouldn’t feel like “cold calling.” It’s simply extending a genuine invitation to take part in something good for the neighborhood, together.
Keep in mind that neighbors aren’t just the people who live next door. They’re the ones you chat with at the gym, text about school pick-up, cheer with at your kid’s games, or bump into at the coffee shop. They may not live on your block, but they’re already connected to your life.
Tend makes it easy for you to help your neighbors discover the love of God in natural ways, and it doesn’t have to be weird at all.

Why the focus on caring for the earth?
Why the focus on caring for the earth?
Caring for the earth isn't just a trendy add-on to our faith. From the beginning, we were created to live in harmony with God, one another and all the earth. Sin fractured that harmony. But God didn't abandon us. God continued to heal us and the rest of creation, most fully realized in Jesus, who opened the door to New Creation where heaven and earth meet again. We participate in God's work of healing relationships when we care for the earth, because by helping creation thrive, we help build communities where everyone has enough. Creation care is also a great way to partner with neighbors who don't follow Jesus, but who share a desire to tend the earth. As we build relationship around our common interest, we have the opportunity to witness to the Creator of it all.

Why is Tend free?
The cost of developing and distributing Tend has been covered through a grant from the Lilly Endowment to help American Christian churches thrive. Thanks to the grant, the Tend curriculum is available to you for free. All we ask is that you provide feedback on your Tend experience through short surveys.

Is Tend connected to a church denomination? What are your affiliations?
Tend is not connected to any specific denomination. Tend is a ministry of Plant With Purpose, which has a clear statement of faith rooted in the gospel. Our work is intentionally ecumenical and collaborative. Our staff, advisors, and partners come from a wide range of Christian traditions.
Our focus is on equipping Christian leaders to practice discipleship and outreach, rooted in creation care, regardless of denominational background. Tend is about helping communities experience and live out the gospel together, not about promoting a particular denominational identity.
